The Guardian - fat panic and class hatred

The Guardian's Comment is Free asked me to write about today's stupid fat panic story, so I did.

If you like what I do, feel free to leave a comment over there and to pester the editors to commission me to write more stuff about fat.

Benefit cuts for the obese are driven by fat panic and class hatred

PS Welcome Guardian readers!

I took a look at this report yesterday - it looks to me, from reading an earlier report, that they are asking people to opt-in with medical information, which is never going to happen. (I looked at this on my blog...)

The shame of it, is that there are otherwise some very good suggestions in the report, and they also acknowledge the need for building communities and safe spaces.

Left a comment on the comments page on the Guardian!

Thanks for this.

It *is* a shame that they come to it so arse-backwards.

Hi Charlotte,
It's Carolyn from Games Monitor. Just wanted to say how excellent your CiF piece was. The best I've read for a long time. Sorry to hear that the Daily Mail ruined your enjoyment of the Fattylympics. Wretched rightists! I'm studying spatial planning at the moment, and every time the 'fat' subject comes up I groan. Thank you so much for the interview you did for GM. I think it's one of the best articles we have on the site. Very best regards, C

Thank you so much!

There are some critical geographers who have done some good work on fat and spatial planning. Rachel Colls published an article a couple of years ago that you might want to check out. I don't have the ref on me at the moment, but if you email me I can send it to you.
