Remember the call for feedback on new guidance on sedentary behaviour and obesity? There's going to be an event to discuss the feedback. This could be a good place to let the policymakers know about Health At Every Size, and to gently persuade them (heehee) to think twice about producing fatphobic policy.
It's a whole day event, with lunch thrown in, so could be pretty hard-going, and there are likely to be some extremely fatphobic people there. It's also likely to be a very interesting experiece, and you'll get to to see how policy is developed. I don't fancy going by myself, but it would be great if there were a few of us there.
Here's the official blurb:
Developing Guidelines For Sedentary Behaviour And Obesity In England
Stakeholder Consultation Event
23 February 2010
Dear Stakeholder,
The Department of Health Sedentary Behaviour and Obesity Expert Working Group
was set up to advise the Cross Government Obesity Unit on the health risks of
sedentary behaviour, including screen time, particularly in relation to overweight and
obesity.
The group has reviewed the evidence on the relationship between sedentary behaviour and health, and has produced a draft report and guidelines on sedentary behaviour and obesity. Additionally, we consulted on the draft guidelines through a web-based consultation from 23 December 2009 to 25 January 2010.
We are now writing to invite you to a consultation event to discuss the draft guidelines.
The event will be held on Tuesday, 23 February 2010 from 9:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.
at Wallace Space, 22 Duke's Road, London, WC1H 9PN. Refreshments and a lunch
will be provided.
(location details at http://www.wallacespace.com/location_sp.htmlH)
The purpose of the stakeholder event is to:
• clarify the draft recommendations and the science underpinning them
• highlight and discuss issues arising from the web consultation feedback
• consider how the recommendations for physical activity may be translated into
practice
• discuss the implications for policy makers, professionals and families
• take on board any other feedback to inform development of the final
recommendations
We hope you will be able to attend this event and continue to help us develop these guidelines. We are very grateful to those of you who have already responded to the web-based consultation, but hope this event will offer the opportunity for more in-depth discussion. We are interested in capturing a wide range of views and will be inviting people from a range of backgrounds. Attendance is free, but places at the event are limited and will be allocated on a first come, first served basis.
If you would like to attend this event, please reply to healthyweight@dh.gsi.gov.uk to book a place. Further details and papers for the day will be sent out to confirmed attendees nearer the event date.
We look forward to seeing you on the day.
Sedentary Behaviour and Obesity Expert Working Group
